METALLICA is expected to play two songs at tonight's Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony — "Enter Sandman" and "Master of Puppets" (to be confirmed) — with the band's former bassist Jason Newsted and his replacement, Robert Trujillo, both taking part in the performance. They will also lead a "surprise jam" at the end of the night consisting of "Train Kept A Rollin'", with Flea and Page, and a performance of "Jailhouse Rock", with all of the inductees, including Wanda Jackson, Ron Wood, Jeff Beck, Bobby Womack, LITTLE ANTHONY & THE IMPERIALS, Rosanne Cash and Paul Shaffer.
METALLICA flew in from Paris, where the group played Wednesday and Thursday nights. The band planned to rehearse with Newsted at soundcheck on Friday but the equipment and the crew apparently arrived later than expected, forcing the soundcheck to be rescheduled for this morning (Saturday).
Earlier this week, Newsted — who was METALLICA's bassist from 1986-2001 — told Billboard.com that when Lars Ulrich called to invite him to play at the ceremony, the drummer told him that "Robert's not gonna play at all... He wants to be there as a fan, too, and wants to see the 'black' album (1991's 'Metallica') band." Newsted added that he never expected to play in the first place and was "totally on board" with the idea of the current version of METALLICA performing without him.
"I felt strongly they should go as that band and represent because...they're strong right now together," Newsted said. "There was no negativity, no hubbub or jealousy or silly, childish...It was years ago, man. We're just gonna have a...great celebration."
The ceremony will be broadcast live at 9 p.m. Saturday on Fuse.
